This is an annoying problem indeed. It’s also one that I’ve run into before. Fortunately there is an easy fix.
How to make your HP Printer Stop Disappearing
This problem is caused by a program that HP installs in your computer when you first installed the printer. The program is called “HP CUE DeviceDiscovery Service”. From the name I assume that it’s in charge of detecting HP devices connected to your computer. Unfortunately in some cases it fails to do its job and your devices remain undetected. Bummer.
To fix the problem simply disable HP CUE DeviceDiscovery Service. Follow these simple steps.
Click on Start.
In the Search field type in Services.msc then press Enter.
The Services Manager will open. Scroll down to where you see HP CUE DeviceDiscovery Service listed.
Right-click on HP CUE DeviceDiscovery Service and click Properties.
A Window will open. For Startup type select Disabled.
Click Apply then close the Window. Reboot your computer.
And your printer should be back!

I dont have HP CUE DeviceDiscovery service in my services.
I run XP Media Center (2005 + SP3), and my HP printer disappears from my printers and faxes folder. I have to restart computer (HP Pavillion laptop), then am able to print one thing before it disappears again. I followed above instructions, but I do not have the HP CUE DeviceDiscovery Service file listed. Any suggestions? Thanks.

The first thing you should do is completely uninstall and then reinstall your HP Printer. Chances are this will fix whatever problem you are having.
UPDATE: SUCCESS!
I had checked on my spooler before, and it was “started”, but was still having the problem, so when I ran across this, I tried it and it WORKED FOR ME!

“…Bring up a Command Prompt. You may remember it being called a DOS prompt, way back in the days of WIndows95 and 98. We can’t really call it a DOS prompt now, since DOS hasn’t really been present in Windows since Windows ME was released, but it does look similar!
You can’t find Command Prompt? It’s in Start, Program Files, Accessories. It brings up a windows of its own.
Type: net start spooler (and remember to hit enter!)
Go back and look in the Control Panel, under Printers & Faxes. They should have re-appeared now!”
FORGOT TO SAY: YOU’LL HAVE TO REBOOT FOR IT TO TAKE EFFECT!

The simplest way to put up a command prompt in windows is by pressing the windows-button and R simltaneously, then type CMD and push enter. Voilà! You’ve got yourself a command prompt!
I am denied access to ‘net start spooler’ and I don’t have HP CUE DeviceDiscovery Service. HELP
