I ran some updates on my hackintosh (a PC running the Apple OS X operating system) and was prompted to restart to finish installing updates.
But when the computer restarted I was presented with a black screen and the error: “No bootable device — insert boot disk and press any key”.
Not good.
It seemed that the updates had broken something. Now I had a backup (always make a backup) but I wanted to see if there was a way to fix this issue. And after messing around for a few hours I found an extremely simple fix.
The Fix:
This fix assumes that your hackintosh is using the Chimera Bootloader and you used the Multibeast method of setting it up. If you used a different method this will not work and will make things worse.
Disclaimer: This worked for me, I don’t guarantee it’ll work for you. It might make things worse or make you end up losing data. Use these instructions at your own risk.
- Download and created a GParted LiveCD
- Boot from the GParted LiveCD. In the menu choose “Local Operating System In Hard Drive”
- The PC should now boot to OS X. But don’t rejoice. It isn’t fixed and you’d need to use the GParted CD every single time.
- Once you’re in OS X run Multibeast
- Go to the “Bootloaders” Tab and select “Chimera v4.0.0”
- Then go to the “Build” Tab and click on Install in the lower right.
Once the process finished eject the GParted CD from your CD/DVD drive and restart your computer.
It should now boot just fine.
Thanks but I have another issue on my old PC. ntldr is missing
I had been running Sierra on my hackintosh and after a few weeks of no use it had a “no boot device” message. Any ideas? Thanks
